Hyundai is a global company that is part of the Korean Chabol which was founded by the most famous Korean businessman Chung Ju-yung. Chung first founded the company in 1947 as a construction company.
The Hyundai group has their headquarters based in the wonderful city of Seoul in Korea.
The Hyundai group have many divisions in the business with two of the very best known are Hyundai Motor Company which has become the world’s fourth biggest automobile manufacturer. The second is the Hyundai Heavy Industries which has become the world’s largest ever ship builder.
1998 found the Hyundai purchasing the Kia Motors company who is the oldest South Korean car company. Kia is (as of 2011) somewhat independent of new and used Hyundai motors, as Hyundai no longer owns an outright majority of Kia shares.
The whole new and used Hyundai Group went under a huge restructure following the East Asian financial crisis in 1997 and also the founder’s death in 2001.
Today many companies that bear the name Hyundai are not part of or legally connected to the Hyundai Group. These companies include Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, Hyundai Department Store Group, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, and Hyundai Development Group. However, all of the named companies are run by Chung's sons or their heirs.
